Why a future vision?
The Zuidwending-Ommelanderwijk area has a long history of underground activities. More projects are planned for the future in mining, housing near Heeresmeer, recreation, and sand extraction. The joint future vision shows how spatial, social, environmental, and economic developments in the area are interconnected. The vision provides direction for future choices. By acting together, the authorities want to give guidance and clarity to the residents.
What will happen now?
Now that the letter of intent has been signed, we are starting an environmental process. Within this process, the authorities will discuss possible future spatial developments in the area.
Residents are involved to think along and discuss how to integrate activities into the social, spatial, and economic future of the area. This process explicitly looks at how future activities contribute to quality and livability. It is also explored whether a regional fund can be established. This fund could channel part of the benefits of the activities back to the area.
Minister Sophie Hermans of Climate and Green Growth, Deputy Pascal Roemers of the Province of Groningen, Mayor Jaap Kuin of Pekela, and Mayor Annelies Pleyte of Veendam were present today in the area to sign the letter of intent.
The implementation of the environmental process starts in spring 2026. The final future vision will be completed by mid-2027.
