Local food stimulates the regional economy
If schools purchase meals from local farmers, these farmers gain a stable and reliable market, the report concludes. Moreover, the money stays in the region: every euro spent locally ultimately generates 1.8 to 2.2 euros for the regional economy. If the Province of Groningen implements a regional school meals program, it could generate up to 43 million euros in additional economic value.
Groningen as a frontrunner in a regional food ecosystem
The report advises developing a food network in Northern Netherlands. School meals can be the first large and steady buyer of food produced in the region. Since 70% of the area consists of agricultural land and Groningen has a strong agriculture and food sector, the province is well positioned to both innovate agriculture and improve residents health.
Stichting Toentje
Stichting Toentje is a social enterprise from Groningen that has been producing fresh vegetables and herbs for the Northern Food Banks since 2013. They do this partly in cooperation with arable farmers. The non-profit organization provides school meals in the city of Groningen and organizes activities around local food from its own restaurant Bie de Buuf. The foundation offers an accessible, sustainable, and safe place to work and learn.
