Tire Recycler Circtec

Circtec gives worn-out car tires a new purpose through chemical recycling. The black filler from the tires is recovered and used for new tires. The released liquids are used by the factory to produce plastics. The biofuels will be used in the future to make international shipping more sustainable. When the factory is fully operational, the CO2 reduction of this project corresponds to about 5% of the total CO2 emissions of the chemical sector in the Netherlands. The arrival of the factory in Farmsum creates 72 new jobs.

To emphasize the importance of the factorys arrival in our province, King Willem-Alexander came to open the Circtec factory in Farmsum on January 27.

Just Transition Fund

The Just Transition Fund contributed over €5.7 million to the construction of Circtec. It helps the Northern Netherlands region and the Chemport Innovation Center to make the chemical industry more sustainable and greener.

The JTF – also known as the fund for a just climate transition – is a European fund for areas most affected by the transition to a green economy. The European Union aims to reduce socio-economic inequality with this. The JTF stems from the European Green Deal, the program for a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. To achieve this transition in Northern Netherlands, €330 million has been pledged until 2027. In the coming years (up to and including 2027), multiple subsidies will be made available for this.

Cooperation

The JTF was developed by the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe and Fryslân, the municipality of Emmen, and the Labour Market Table Northern Netherlands (a public cooperation between the three Northern Labour Market regions - these are the municipality and UWV - and the three northern provinces). The Northern Netherlands Cooperation (SNN) executes the JTF subsidies.
