With the competition, the initiators aim to encourage villages to collaboratively come up with a walk and apply for it. The winning idea will receive the complete development of the village walk, including funding and guidance. Applications can be submitted until February 14, 2026. The award ceremony will take place in the provincial house on March 26.
Village Walks
Village walks are short, marked walking routes through and around the village that have been created by residents. You can enjoy the landscape, meet fellow villagers, and relax. They often go over historical paths or farmland. The province of Groningen currently has over 45 walks.
Inspiration Meeting October 16
To inspire interested parties and prepare them for an application, an inspiration meeting will take place on Thursday, October 16 from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM in the provincial house of Groningen. Village associations and resident groups are warmly invited to share their ideas and learn how to create their own village walk. Registration is necessary and can be done via this page.
Example from Practice
On October 2, the first meeting was held in Veendam. It was an inspiring evening for village residents with a desire to walk. It became clear that many villages have wonderful ideas for their own walk, but often do not know how to bring that idea to fruition. Landscape Management Groningen provided practical tips: from route ideas to collaboration with landowners. There was also a dairy farmer from Ten Post who shared experiences with walkers on his own farm path.
