Three Pillars

In the coming years, organizations, together with stakeholders, will first work on developing plans and then on implementation. The cooperation agreement has been signed. It concerns three program components:

  1. Strengthening agriculture by raising low-lying agricultural lands with locally dredged harbor sludge. This provides a solution for soil subsidence, salinization, and peat oxidation, giving agricultural activities new prospects.

  2. Sustainable dike reinforcement by setting up clay maturation sites where sludge from the area can mature into strong dike clay. This clay is used for strengthening the Dollard dike.

  3. Restoration of estuarine nature and the creation of a green-blue buffer zone between the villages Borgsweer, Lalleweer, Termunten, Termunterzijl, and the Oosterhorn industrial area.  This not only strengthens biodiversity but also improves the livability of surrounding villages.

Combinations

The Growing Coast program combines climate-adaptive and circular working. By reusing sludge from the Eems-Dollard in the immediate vicinity, turbidity of the Eems-Dollard is addressed and CO₂ emissions are reduced. Moreover, the program offers opportunities for agriculture, recreation, and nature that fit the Eems-Dollard. This creates a Wadden coast area where living, working, and recreation will continue to be good in the future.

Cooperation

The cooperation agreement applies to planning and implementation. We assume a period of 10 years.
