In the Netherlands, the current cervical cancer screening leads to more than 5,000 incorrect results annually. Furthermore, the testing process is labor-intensive and uses the chemical bisulfite, which is harmful to the environment. The new method developed in this project can detect the HPV virus, a major cause of cervical cancer, earlier and without bisulfite. This makes screening faster, more reliable, and scalable. With funding from the JTF, this new technology can be further developed and tested.
Groningen as a region for innovative healthcare technology
If this new screening method proves successful, it could also be applied in the future to other types of cancer, such as ovarian cancer. This not only improves healthcare and reduces environmental impact but also strengthens Groningen’s position as a leader in innovative healthcare technology. The project also promotes collaboration between companies and knowledge institutions and creates employment in a sector with great future prospects.
