Crime does not respect provincial or national borders. In our province, there are examples where criminals – the so-called underworld – use services from society and governments, the upper world, to gain financial advantage. This interconnection poses a serious threat to both society and public administration.
As a province, we provide subsidies and permits and commission third parties. There is a risk that these end up with criminal (legal) persons who misuse them for illegal activities. Collecting and making data available supports the province in developing and implementing policy and also provides valuable insights for other interested parties.
Data
The figures provide insight into undermining crime, such as drug and arms trafficking, environmental crime, and threats to public administration. But also other registered crimes, including sexual offenses, violence, robberies, assaults, and discrimination. The Safety Monitor shows where these offenses occur, how often, which trends are visible, and how the situation in Groningen compares to the national average.
Besides data per municipality, the Safety Monitor also contains figures on the number of registered offenses in all twelve provinces, dating back to 2012. Figures and trends are compared between Groningen municipalities and between the province of Groningen and other provinces. The data is based on publicly available police-registered figures.
State of Groningen
The Safety Monitor is a new chapter of The State of Groningen, a website with data on provincial policy areas. For various topics, it shows how the implementation or situation of these policy themes stands. Clearly in one place, so the information is easy to find.
