Limburg Centraal 2040
The Urbanization Concept forms an integral basis for Limburg Centraal until 2040. It determines the direction where new housing, employment, and facilities will be located, but also where space remains for nature, water, climate adaptation, and accessibility. Together, the partners set the “point on the horizon” for a sustainable, livable, and economically strong region.
The concept is important because it provides direction, coordination, and clarity on major spatial issues. It helps align various interests and challenges, such as housing, economy, and climate. This way, the involved governments, residents, and entrepreneurs know what to expect and can align their own policies and plans accordingly. The next step is the Urbanization Strategy. This will translate the ambitions from the Urbanization Concept into concrete actions, timelines, and agreements: who does what, when and how, with which resources.
Collaboration and Investments
To achieve the set goals, the Province and municipalities closely cooperate with national and regional partners. Together with the national government, they look at which instruments can be used by the different partners to accelerate the urbanization task. This involves not only financial resources but also legal, planning, and organizational instruments. In October 2025, the Provincial Council reserved €50 million for upcoming urban developments. Business cases have already been developed for the six station areas in the region, helping to further concretize the plans per area.
Next Steps
In the coming period, the Urbanization Concept will be further developed into a definitive Urbanization Strategy. In the Administrative Environmental Consultation taking place in June 2026, the Urbanization Strategy will be discussed by the national government and the region. Subsequently, further agreements will be made regarding the implementation of the urbanization task, including the elaboration of concrete projects, the division of roles among involved parties, and the planning of necessary measures.
