Festive Opening
Deputy Jasper Kuntzelaers and Mayor Antoin Scholten addressed the audience. Deputy Kuntzelaers, well acquainted with the old situation, is very pleased with this renewed underpass: “I have regularly passed the Vierpaardjes myself and know the old bottlenecks like no other. I am therefore very happy that this place has now been greatly improved. A beautiful underpass where cyclists and pedestrians can travel separated from train and car traffic through the area. This has resulted in better flow, significantly improved traffic safety, and public transport can now run more smoothly. An important step for a safe and accessible city.” Mayor Scholten symbolically handed over the Vierpaardjes underpass to the city. Alderman Erwin Boom gave the starting signal for the festive opening parade of 50 special vehicles. Immediately after the opening, the underpass was opened to all traffic.
From Bottleneck to Milestone
With the opening of the Vierpaardjes underpass, a long-cherished wish of the city has become reality. The new underpass provides more safety on the road and rail, better traffic flow, and improved accessibility of Venlo-South and the city center. Where for years queues and closed railway barriers held up traffic, it now flows safely and smoothly under the railway. A project carried out according to plan and in good cooperation between the municipality of Venlo, ProRail, and contractors Mobilis and Dura Vermeer, with financial contributions from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and Province of Limburg, and a European subsidy for the preparation and execution of the project.
