Engine for Sustainable Growth and Innovation

Limburg is in full development: as the cradle of innovative chemistry through the sustainability efforts at Chemelot, as a future focal point for groundbreaking research thanks to the Einstein Telescope, and as an important region for the defense industry by connecting production and innovation strength. As a Growth Region, Limburg is ready for a leap in scale in economy, innovation, and talent development. To harness this potential, Limburg calls on the future cabinet to strongly focus on three pillars:

  1. Active industrial policy for Chemelot
Support Chemelot in achieving their sustainability goals to preserve the indispensable basic industry for the Netherlands and Europe and seize the growth opportunities of innovative chemistry. Investing in sustainability must pay off so that companies can continue to grow in the Netherlands and not prematurely fail or relocate.
  2. Space for talent in an international region
Enable the recruitment and retention of talent in Limburg, a Euregio where borders should not be a barrier. Facilitate tri-national curricula and diploma recognition across national borders, and support Limburg Centraal – the living, working, and living program around the six Limburg intercity stations – which is crucial for an attractive business climate.
  3. Structural strengthening of regional financial capacity
Increase the structural investment possibilities of the region so that Limburg can continue to stimulate broad prosperity and innovation and address complex and unique opportunities regionally. Preferably together with the national government, in ongoing programs and through connection to national investment institutions.

Building together the Netherlands of tomorrow

In a letter to informateur Van Haersma Buma and the negotiating parties, Province of Limburg and its partners explicitly ask the future cabinet to include these three pillars in the coalition agreement. Realizing these preconditions is not only a Limburg wish but structurally delivers more broad prosperity and innovative strength for the whole of the Netherlands. In Limburg, we have a clear view of how targeted investments in industry, talent, and financing directly contribute to economic growth, job growth, and the strategic position of the Netherlands in Europe.

The letter is signed not only by Province of Limburg but also by the municipalities of Maastricht, Heerlen, Venlo, and Sittard-Geleen, Maastricht University, Maastricht UMC+, the Brightlands Campuses, Chemelot, LIOF, and the Limburg Employers Association.
