Background and Purpose of the Meeting

The approach to loneliness is an important focal point in the Policy Framework for Living Together and Security of Existence. Loneliness is indeed a growing challenge in the Netherlands, but certainly also in Limburg: recent research shows that over 40% of Limburgs youth and more than 50% of the elderly feel lonely to some extent. Following a commitment made to the Provincial States, efforts have been specifically directed towards connecting policy makers working on the theme of loneliness among young people and the elderly in Limburg. A recent provincial analysis revealed that Limburg municipalities have a need for more mutual connection and sharing of knowledge and experiences in addressing loneliness.

To address this need, the Social Domain policy platform has now been launched, with this first meeting kicking off: Through Connection to a Stronger Approach to Loneliness.

Program

Deputy Marc van Caldenberg emphasized the importance of collaboration and an integrated approach in his welcoming speech. Subsequently, a feedback was provided on the main outcomes from the provincial analysis regarding loneliness.

The afternoon then offered space for inspiring external speakers, followed by speed dates and group sessions where participants formulated current issues, knowledge questions, and possible next steps together. The meeting concluded with a plenary feedback session on findings from the groups.

Next Steps

All participants received an evaluation form, the results of which will be processed in the further approach to loneliness within Limburg. The Province will continue to work - together with municipalities and partners - to strengthen connection and effectiveness of local and regional initiatives in the field of loneliness prevention.
