WoKT

The WoKT is a government scheme that supports municipalities in the construction of necessary infrastructure, such as roads, bike paths, and public transport in and around new housing projects, enabling these projects to start more quickly. The government has made 2.5 billion euros available through the Mobility Fund, of which 1.0 billion euros is allocated for the WoKT scheme. The municipalities of Heerlen, Maastricht, Roermond, Weert, and Venlo have applied for financial contributions for area development at various locations in the railway zones. The majority of these applications have been approved, marking an important step in realizing well-accessible and new homes within Limburg Centraal.

Michael Theuns, deputy (Space, Housing, Water, Soil and Livability): With this WoKT allocation, we are taking a big step together in the urbanization task and in realizing sufficient and suitable homes for our Limburg residents. This great result shows that cooperation pays off. Recently, as the Province of Limburg, we also reserved 50 million euros ourselves and demonstrate that Limburg is ready to do business and co-invest in the national urbanization task. It is gratifying that the government now also values the hard work on Limburg Centraal with a substantial financial contribution for more than 8,000 homes.

The projects

The projects in Limburg Centraal that have been approved are the following:
Heerlen : Heerlen Centrum
Heerlen : Molenberg
Maastricht : Sphinx – Trega Zinkwit

Roermond : Weerstand
Roermond : Roerdelta
Weert : Drakensteyn

Venlo : Kazernekwartier

Cooperation pays off!

The allocation confirms the success of regional cooperation within Limburg Centraal among: the Limburg municipalities (Heerlen, Sittard-Geleen, Maastricht, Roermond, Weert, and Venlo), Waterschap Limburg, Enexis, and the Province of Limburg. Good proposals from the municipalities and joint efforts have led to a positive result in the form of this contribution from WoKT. Within 5 years, many plans for new and affordable homes can actually start. This not only contributes to strengthening livability and improving accessibility but also to the provincial housing task.

Deputy Theuns: “In addition to the Limburg Centraal municipalities, the Stadsregio Parkstad has also submitted an application for WoKT. As the Province of Limburg, we have supported this application as well and are pleased that the Stadsregio’s application has also been approved. This means Limburg has received more than 100 million in contributions in total. Together we are building Limburg!”

In addition to the allocated WoKT funds, the Provincial Council of Limburg also approved on Friday, October 31, 2025, the formation of a program reserve of 50 million euros for the urbanization task Limburg Centraal. By releasing this amount, an important next step has been taken for the construction of over 30,000 homes until 2040, near the intercity stations in Limburg. Limburg thus shows it is ready to do business and co-invest in the national urbanization task.
