Successful First Round: Concrete Improvement Across Limburg
The WRL Opportunities Scheme proves its value: in the first round, 68 applications were received, of which 26 projects were approved. 20 applications are still under review, with the expectation that the entire budget of the first tranche will be used. Initiatives such as water buffers, infiltration facilities, the redesign of streams, and protective measures at homes show immediate results. All contribute quickly and visibly to reducing damage and risks during extreme rainfall.
Deputy Theuns emphasizes the power of collaboration: “With the WRL Opportunities Scheme, we ensure that at dozens of locations work can begin. Every measure, big or small, makes us more resilient against extreme rain showers and floods. Together, we are already taking steps today that will make a difference tomorrow.”
Second Round: Open for Applications from Residents and Organizations
For the new subsidy round, municipalities, water boards, land management organizations, housing corporations, companies, foundations, and residents can submit applications again. Collaborative projects are also eligible. Projects must demonstrate a measurable effect within two years on reducing water nuisance, without causing new problems elsewhere. The scheme mainly supports practical, local measures that have a quick effect.
