The province of North Brabant has published the Brabant Monitor Broad Prosperity. The goal is not only to measure broad prosperity but also to understand it. The monitor combines objective data, such as income and education, with subjective information from a survey of over 10,000 Brabanders. This creates a complete picture of how things really are in the province.

The Brabant Monitor Broad Prosperity is the successor to the Monitor Experienced Broad Prosperity published in 2023 and was conducted in the autumn of 2024.

The insights are super useful for us to align policy with what people need.

Results

The results show that 71% of Brabanders were satisfied with their own broad prosperity, with an average score of 7.4. This is comparable to 2 years ago, although the number of satisfied residents has slightly decreased.

  • Older people are the most satisfied, and young people the least.
  • People outside the city are more satisfied than city dwellers.
  • Regionally, there are also differences: residents of the Eindhoven metropolitan area are the most satisfied, while those in West Brabant are the least.

Experienced broad prosperity varies greatly among people, depending on their grip on life, trust in others, social connectedness, and financial capacity. For example, 79% of people with trust in others are satisfied with their broad prosperity, compared to 58% without trust.

Deputy for Broad Prosperity Saskia Boelema on the monitor: The Brabant Monitor Broad Prosperity shows how things really are with our residents. Not only in numbers but also in their experiences. These insights are super useful for us to align policy with what people need. Thus, broad prosperity is not an abstract ideal but a concrete guideline to build together towards a Brabant where everyone feels at home and can live well.

Deepening on health and young adults

This edition of the monitor delves deeper into 2 important themes: health and young adults. The monitor shows that most Brabanders are satisfied with their health. However, there is also a part that is dissatisfied:

  • About 1 in 8 residents is dissatisfied with their physical health.
  • Almost 1 in 10 are dissatisfied with their mental health.

A striking finding is that young people in the city are less satisfied with their mental health than young people outside the city.

The monitor has also zoomed in deeper on Brabants young adults. Two-thirds of them are satisfied with their broad prosperity, but they give their financial situation and mental health relatively low scores. Conversations reveal that young people often struggle with the pressures of modern life. Themes such as mental health, financial stability, and housing are strongly interconnected and influence how they experience their lives.

About the Brabant Monitor Broad Prosperity

Broad prosperity is about the quality of life in the here and now and the extent to which it comes at the expense of that of future generations or people elsewhere in the world. The province of North Brabant considers broad prosperity as a guideline for policy, as laid down in the Governance Agreement 2023–2027 (refers to another website) and the Implementation Agenda Broad Prosperity 2024–2027 (refers to another website), with concrete goals and actions. One of those actions is to develop the Brabant Monitor Broad Prosperity. PON & TELOS have been commissioned for this. The monitor forms a valuable starting point for dialogue with administrators and policymakers at provincial and (sub)regional levels.
