Brabant municipalities and private landowners allocated 70 hectares of land for business parks last year. This is the lowest allocation since 2011. Half of all allocations in 2024 were made at Logistics Park Moerdijk. This and more is revealed in the Monitor Business Parks published this week by the Province of North Brabant.
The low allocation in 2024 has various causes. Firstly, there is little land directly available for companies, partly due to years of legal procedures that delay the development of new large business parks. Additionally, entrepreneurs are hesitant to invest in new construction due to grid congestion, nitrogen measures, and geopolitical unrest.

“The developments of recent years force us to look even better at the possibilities that existing business parks offer,” says Deputy Stijn Smeulders. “Isn’t it smarter to build upwards? Can the parking lot be on the roof? Are we making optimal use of the connections over water? As a province, we can also play a role in this. By deploying our expertise to work with the regions to see if we can better utilize the space on those sites.”
The province can also encourage collaboration within the Brabant regions to create new, suitable business parks that fit the surrounding area. A good example of this is Brainport-East. For this, the municipalities of Asten, Deurne, Gemert-Bakel, Helmond, Laarbeek, and Someren are collaborating at the Varenschut-Lungendonk location. The province intends to financially support this development with a credit facility from the immunization portfolio.
Important Engine
In Brabant, around 500,000 people work in a business park. They are therefore an important engine for economic development, innovation, and employment in the province. The total area of business parks in North Brabant is 14,000 hectares. Each year, the province monitors the development of these business parks. The data from the monitor is used by the province to make agreements with the Brabant regions about existing and new work locations.
With the Great Harvest approach, municipalities, businesses, and the province have also made significant strides in making business parks more sustainable in recent years. Recently, it became clear that six more sites are joining the Great Harvest, bringing the total number of participants to 18 business parks. On all those sites, the province contributes knowledge and resources to smart solutions for issues such as energy demand.
