The European Road Cycling Championships, BMX Freestyle and the Cyclo-cross World Championships in Hoogerheide will take place in 2028 in North Brabant. North Brabant is thus the first participating province in the Dutch Cycling Festival organized by the KNWU.

With the Dutch Cycling Festival, the KNWU will celebrate its 100th anniversary throughout 2028 and make the Netherlands the center of international cycling in the Olympic year 2028. The festival is not a traditional event lasting a few days or weeks, but a series of championships spread across the country. The competitions are not only a stage for top performances but also catalysts for social and community projects to get more people moving, especially more children on bicycles.

From elite sports to movement for everyone

The KNWU collaborates with the province of North Brabant, BrabantSport, the urban region Breda-Tilburg and West Brabant Region, the Cycling Committee Grote Prijs Adrie van der Poel, Golazo and Libéma Profcycling to use the championships for social projects aimed at getting more people in Brabant, especially children, moving.

Cycling back to the cradle

The choice of North Brabant as the first province is no coincidence. Brabant was for a long time the beating heart of Dutch cycling. The passion for cycling is deeply rooted in Brabant culture.
I am proud that Brabant and cycling are once again inseparably connected in this way, says deputy Bas Maes (Sports). Here cycling history was written, here cycling grew into a popular sport. With these three international championships, we honor that past and invest in the future at the same time. Above all, we want to get more children and young people on bicycles and show how cycling connects communities.

Cycling connects

Maurice Leeser, director-manager KNWU: Cycling connects people, gives freedom and contributes to a healthy society. It is fantastic that the province of North Brabant and partners are prominently part of the Dutch Cycling Festival by hosting no less than three top sports events in 2028. Together with our riders, cycling clubs, volunteers and partners, we show how (elite) sports, fun and social impact can go hand in hand.
