A glass artwork by Marc Mulders in the shape of a mandala. This contemporary symbol of connection will now be given to residents of the province who are honored as ‘Honorary Citizens of Brabant’.
Meaningful
Residents of Brabant who contribute or have contributed significantly in various fields to the province can be appointed as ‘Honorary Citizens of Brabant’. This can be in cultural, sports, economic, or administrative areas. Examples of honorary citizens of Brabant include singer Guus Meeuwis, dressage rider Sanne Voets, and entrepreneur (late) Wim van der Leegte.
Contemporary
Until now, honorary citizens of the province of North Brabant received a provincial medal. The designer and maker was the Brabant artist Niel Steenbergen (1911-1997). The provincial medals are depleted. The mold in which they were cast is no longer usable. Therefore, the Provincial Executive has decided to choose a different, contemporary distinction.
“These artworks are transparent, colorful, and a symbol of connection.” Kings Commissioner Ina Adema
Metaphor
Kings Commissioner Ina Adema is enthusiastic about the design by artist and glassmaker Marc Mulders – who himself is an Honorary Citizen of Brabant. “These artworks are transparent, colorful, and a symbol of connection.” All artworks are part of a series and have a unique character. “That is a beautiful metaphor for our province and for the Honorary Citizens of Brabant,” says Adema.
