The first area sign of Geopark Schelde Delta has been unveiled. It is located on the provincial road between Dinteloord and Oud-Gastel in West Brabant. This is the first sign on the Brabantse Wal. In the future, more signs will follow in other municipalities of the Brabantse Wal to make the UNESCO Geopark as visible as possible.
First UNESCO World Heritage Sign
The sign has been placed in Dinteloord. Deputy Saskia Boelema: “Thanks to this sign, every motorist passing by can see how special this region is, where nature, culture, and geology come together in a unique landscape. The Geopark status is not only a recognition of our past but also an incentive to work together for a sustainable future for this unique area. We are proud of this as a province.”
Councilor Remery on behalf of the Brabantse Wal municipalities: “With the sign, we make ourselves, as Brabantse Wal, even more visible and invite people to recreate, stay, and experience here. It is and remains a unique region, rich in nature, culture, and geological history. We are, of course, proud of the UNESCO status and we are happy to show it.”
Schelde Delta is a Unique Region
Nowhere in the world is the interaction between man and water - the cooperation and the opposition - as visible in the landscape as in the Flemish-Dutch Schelde Delta. Finding a balance between the good and the necessary in this dynamic landscape is difficult and deserves all the attention that Geopark status provides.
International Certification for Geology
Recognition as a UNESCO Geopark is a certification that draws international attention to the geological heritage of an area and the associated cultural history. This also gives initiatives for research, nature and landscape management, and sustainable tourism a better chance of obtaining (European) funds. UNESCO also places great importance on education, local traditions, and the holistic approach of geoparks.
