On Friday, September 12, 2025, the Water Board De Dommel, the municipality of Meierijstad, and the Province of North Brabant celebrated together with residents and partners the completion of the Climate Robust Beekdal Sint-Oedenrode project. The Dommel Valley in the heart of Rooi is now ready for the future: strong, green, and better protected against extreme weather.
The Dommel flows through the core of Sint-Oedenrode. In heavy rain, there was a risk of flooding. Therefore, a large part of the Dommel has been widened so that it can safely overflow its banks during high water. At the same time, an ecological connection zone has been created: a green ribbon that connects nature areas and provides living space for plants and animals.
Ready for the Future
Due to the new layout, the area is better protected against heavy rain and long periods of drought. Water quality has improved, and the area has become safer. Walking paths and seating areas have also been created so that residents and visitors can enjoy the beautiful landscape.
Collaboration and Input
The project has come about thanks to intensive collaboration between Water Board De Dommel, the municipality of Meierijstad, and the Province of North Brabant. Residents, associations, and businesses actively contributed. As a result, a result has emerged that fits the area and the people who live there.
Festive Completion
At the festive gathering on September 12 with residents of Sint-Oedenrode and all involved partners, Saskia Boelema, deputy of the Province of North Brabant, expressed her enthusiasm: “With this ambitious project, we not only strengthen protection against flooding and drought but also concretely contribute to climate robustness, nature restoration, and recreational value for the people of Brabant. Only by working together as organizations can we truly tackle major challenges such as water safety, climate adaptation, and nature restoration. This project shows that when everyone brings their expertise and responsibility, we can achieve much more together than separately.”
