On Wednesday, September 24, tap water was the focus in hundreds of classrooms in Brabant. More than 21,000 children – from daycare to group 8 – participated in National Tap Water Day. They discovered why tap water is healthy, sustainable, and of great importance. The official kick-off took place at the Koningschool in Waalwijk, where Deputy Saskia Boelema (Province of North Brabant) and Rob van Dongen (General Director of Brabant Water) gave a special guest lesson.
A Lesson That Makes an Impression
During the lesson, children delved into the entire story behind tap water: from its origin in nature, through the purification process, to the moment it flows from the tap. They learned why their bodies need clean water daily for growth, concentration, and a strong immune system. They also received practical tips on how to save water at home. Being economical with drinking water is important for the future.
Guest Lessons Across Brabant
In more than 900 groups, the Tap Water Day lesson was taught by teachers and by staff from Brabant Water. All managers and the entire management team of Brabant Water provided a guest lesson, about 50 in total. The students of group 7-8 from the Koningschool even received an extra special lesson from Deputy Saskia Boelema and General Director Rob van Dongen.
“It’s fantastic that these children are learning more about drinking water today,” said Rob van Dongen, General Director of Brabant Water. “We have the best and healthiest drinking water in the world in the Netherlands, and these children will enjoy it for their entire lives. There is currently a lot of discussion about drinking water, and children always have many questions about it. There’s nothing more enjoyable than discussing it as a proud director.”
“In Brabant, we are going to take a big step in the coming years with water conservation at home,” added Deputy Saskia Boelema of the Province of North Brabant. “You can’t start too early to show that drinking water is good for you, where it comes from, and how it is made. And that it’s important to be conscious about it.”
Healthy and Sustainable
Children are often bombarded with conflicting messages on social media about what is healthy to drink. National Tap Water Day offers a clear and reliable story. Tap water is not only the healthiest choice but also the most sustainable one. By conveying this to children at a young age, they know that tap water is good for them and completely normal – something that is just part of life.
