Today marks the official start of the implementation of the Eastern Langstraat Area Development (GOL). At the construction site in Waalwijk, Deputy Wilma Dirken and Infrastructure Director Walter Deelen (Mourik–BESIX) jointly raised the GOL flag. This marks the beginning of a major quality boost for the area by the province and its partners.

The area development focuses on nature restoration and strengthening water safety, including better flood protection for ’s-Hertogenbosch and surroundings. Additionally, the GOL improves traffic safety and accessibility along and around the A59. Social interests such as nature, safety, livability, and infrastructure are carefully balanced.

Deputy Wilma Dirken (Spatial Planning): “Today we take an important step for the future of the Eastern Langstraat. We improve nature and water safety and make the area safer and more livable. This requires careful choices between different interests, but the result benefits the region greatly. I am proud of the cooperation with all our partners and happy that we can now really start.”

Work Commences

In Waalwijk, the first visible works are now starting. Mourik-Besix is the first to construct a temporary roundabout at Valkenvoortweg–Schutskooiweg. This measure improves traffic flow during the construction phase and creates space for the future redesign of the connections to the A59.
From this location, work progresses towards Heusden, with various GOL measures being realized step by step. These include:

  • relieving residential areas by adjusting or removing unsafe on- and off-ramps;
  • the construction of two ecological corridors, including an eco-tunnel under the A59;
  • creating additional water storage areas;
    and realizing a fast cycling route between Waalwijk and ’s-Hertogenbosch.
  • and constructing a new ring road for Vlijmen

The implementation runs until 2029. The Province of North Brabant plays a commissioning role in close cooperation with the municipalities of Heusden, Waalwijk and ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Aa and Maas water board, and Rijkswaterstaat.
