The Province of North Holland is providing a €400,000 subsidy for energy cooperatives, associations, and foundations.
From January 1 to October 1, 2026, they can apply for a maximum of €20,000 per project. The funds are intended, among other things, for room rental at information meetings, the purchase of materials, or hiring experts.
The province aims to ensure that 50% of energy projects in North Holland are locally owned. This agreement comes from the Climate Agreement. It states that for the generation of sustainable energy on land (solar parks and wind turbines), citizens must be able to benefit from the project for at least half. This can happen, for example, by neighborhood residents becoming half owners of the wind turbine or solar park through an energy cooperative. Or by investing part of the profit in neighborhood projects. Neighborhood residents can also start a project themselves.
More than 100 energy cooperatives, associations, and foundations
In North Holland, more than 100 energy cooperatives, associations, and foundations are active that want to contribute to the energy transition. More and more groups of citizens are generating sustainable energy together or saving energy in their neighborhoods. These initiatives are often run by volunteers, which can cause a shortage of manpower and expertise. With the subsidy scheme Local energy initiatives, the province wants to support these initiatives.
More information about the subsidy scheme will be available from January 1, 2026, on the page Subsidy schemes.
