Commissioner of the King, Arthur van Dijk, swore in Herman Wiersema as mayor of Opmeer on Thursday, February 19, 2026. The appointment is for 6 years.
Wiersema is 47 years old and a member of the PvdA. Until now, he was acting mayor in Opmeer. From 2019 to 2025, he was manager at the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism and the National Crisis Centre. Before that, Wiersema was manager and advisor at the municipality of Amersfoort. From 2014 to 2018, he was chairman of the PvdA Amsterdam. Wiersema studied journalism at the School of Journalism in Zwolle and completed his Master of Business Administration.
