On April 14, TNO, commissioned by the province, will install 2 additional measuring stations to monitor air quality in Krommenie and Assendelft.
One such measuring station is already located along the Provincial Road at the intersection with Vlietsend.
TNO has been measuring air quality along the N203 in Krommenie since November 2024. The installation of the 2 additional measuring stations was announced at that time. By placing 2 other measuring stations slightly further from the Provincial Road (N203) for a period of 3 months, TNO will obtain a reliable picture of the impact of traffic on air quality along that Provincial Road. One additional measuring station will be placed in Krommenie, on the north side of the N203. And one additional measuring station will be placed on the south side, in Assendelft.
What is being measured
The measuring stations from TNO measure fine particles (PM2.5 and PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The collected measurement data will be analyzed. Those figures will be compared with the standards that apply for fine particles and nitrogen dioxide. This involves the EU limit values and the advisory values of the World Health Organization.
Interim Report and Final Report
After six months of measurement, TNO will share the first results in an interim report in July 2025. By comparing the data from the measuring station along the N203 with those from the 2 additional measuring stations, the influence of traffic on the Provincial Roads air quality can also be included in the final report. That final report is expected in the first quarter of 2026.
Liveability Krommenie and Assendelft
The traffic nuisance from the N203 puts pressure on the liveability in Krommenie and Assendelft. To improve the situation in the short term, the province of North Holland, the municipality of Zaanstad, and the Transport Region of Amsterdam are working together on a number of interventions in the fields of spatial design, traffic, public transport, and cycling.
Connection A8-A9
The Provincial Road is currently the connection between the A8 and A9. A new connection offers traffic an alternative route. The province is working with the municipalities in the region and the Transport Region of Amsterdam on a possible robust solution for the A8-A9 Connection. The results of the studies into 2 possible other robust solutions for a connection between the A8 and A9 are expected to be shared with the community in May.
More work around the Provincial Road in the coming years
In the coming years, significant work will be done by the province and the municipality around and on the Provincial Road in Krommenie. This includes renovation, major maintenance, and improvements. Various studies are also underway, in which the future area around the N203 in Krommenie is being considered. The province and municipality are trying to combine the work as much as possible. On the page N203 Provincial Road Krommenie, it can be seen at a glance what is planned for the coming year.
