To gain insight into consumer purchasing behavior, the province participates every 4 years in a study on shops and hospitality. This is called the Purchasing Flows Research.

The research is conducted in the Randstad. The provinces of North Holland, Utrecht, and South Holland are participating.

Esther Rommel, Deputy for Economy: “The retail landscape in North Holland is changing rapidly. It is essential to understand consumer purchasing behavior. This knowledge helps keep the supply of shops and hospitality in cities and villages attractive and prevent vacancies. We are happy to share the research results with municipalities and entrepreneurs so they can also benefit from it.”

Where do residents do their daily shopping? Where do they go for a shopping day? Where do they make large purchases such as furniture, and where do they use hospitality services? Together with answers to the question of how satisfied residents are with the various shopping areas, the research illustrates the functioning of shops and hospitality.

The research is conducted on behalf of the provinces by Ipsos I&O. In September and October, letters with questionnaires will be sent out in North Holland. Households are randomly selected from all inhabited addresses in the municipalities. Residents who do not receive a letter but also want to participate can fill out the questionnaire starting September 2 via www.startvragenlijst.nl/koopgedrag Opens an external link

In early 2026, the results will be published. More information and a short video about the research can be found on the site of Koopstromen.nl Opens an external link .
