Commissioner of the King Arthur van Dijk swore in Patrick Blokker as assistant beach warden of Hollands Kroon on Wednesday, May 28, in the presence of Mayor Rian van Dam.
“Working with and on the water is tailor-made for him. In his previous job as a fisherman on a mussel trawler, he dealt daily with the whims of wind, water, and tide. It was precision work, requiring experience and knowledge of the sea,” said Arthur van Dijk. “He has an eye for what the sea gives, but also for what it takes back. It’s not surprising that he now continues this relationship as an assistant beach warden.”
“I am already a harbor master in Hollands Kroon, and now the assistant beach warden also came my way. Since I have always been involved with the sea and the municipality, this role seemed like a nice addition,” said Patrick Blokker during the swearing-in. “Moreover, in my previous job, I didn’t always have regular workdays; I was sometimes away from home for 4 days. I now find it nice, also for my family, that I can be home more often.”
Assistant beach wardens supervise and provide assistance with what washes up on the beach, such as goods or stranded ships. The assistant beach wardens engage the appropriate authorities to subsequently seize the goods.
Patrick Blokker is also a harbor master. The harbor master is, among other things, the point of contact for harbor users regarding shipping traffic and assigns mooring places.
