The electricity grid in the region is becoming congested. This means that housing construction is delayed and companies find it harder to establish themselves or become more sustainable.

Therefore, TenneT wants to build a new high-voltage station south of the North Sea Canal, near the A9 highway and the western port area of Amsterdam. The grid operator is currently investigating 6 possible locations. Help from the community is also needed. That is why TenneT is organizing an information evening on Monday, September 29, in the village center of Spaarndam.

6 Search Locations

TenneT, together with North Holland and various municipalities, is looking for a suitable location for the new high-voltage station. This is a challenge, as this type of high-voltage station is not located in a building, but outside on a site of about 25 hectares. At the end of 2024, 3 possible locations around the Groene Schip in the Houtrakpolder were already identified.

The province has announced these locations and made the plan available for inspection. Meanwhile, the responses to the plan from residents and other parties have been mapped and published. Based on these responses, additional search locations have been added and 2 locations have been merged. There are now 6 search locations. TenneT would like to inform the community about this.

Open Evening

During the information evening on September 29, project staff from TenneT will provide explanations about the project. Visitors are warmly invited to ask questions and provide suggestions for a careful conclusion of the investigations. It is an open evening, and there is no plenary presentation. The information evening is on:

  • Date: Monday, September 29
  • Time: from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
  • Location: Village Center Spaarndam, Ringweg 36, 2064 KK Spaarndam

What Happens Next?

Various studies will first be conducted to determine the most suitable location for the high-voltage station. The major timeline of the project is as follows:

  • In 2026, the final location will be chosen
  • In 2027, the draft decision will be available for inspection, on which you can respond
  • In 2029, construction of the station and above-ground connections will start
