In October, nature will be restored on 2 islands near Dolphijnstraat in Westzaan.
This is necessary to maintain special types of nature (such as peat moss reed land) and protected animal species. The work will take place from Dolphijnstraat. Since this is a dead-end street, no traffic disruption and little inconvenience is expected.
The 2 islands, approximately 36,000 and 10,000 m2, are owned by the province of North Holland. At the request of the province, Natuurlijke Zaken will carry out the work. Both plots are part of the Natura 2000 area Polder Westzaan and the Nature Network Netherlands.
Nature Restoration
The nature restoration focuses mainly on improving the conditions for the peat moss reed land. Young trees that have spontaneously grown will be removed. Old reeds will also be mowed and removed in phases. Furthermore, the habitats of the Northern water vole and water shrew will be strengthened.
Well Prepared
The work will be carried out in October, outside the breeding season and at the best time for the Northern water vole. A nature assessment has been conducted in advance and a work protocol has been established. At the start, an ecologist will check the plots to ensure that flora and fauna are not affected.
