The Amsterdam Transport Region and the provinces of North Holland and Flevoland are collaborating with all municipalities to create an attractive network of cycling routes.
These are safe and comfortable cycling routes that improve accessibility to urban areas and surrounding landscapes. In the past year, several new bike paths have been completed and work has begun. A comprehensive overview of all developments is included in the progress report on cycling routes 2024 published today.
We are cycling more often and further, and older people are cycling longer. This is good news because cycling is beneficial for oneself and for the environment. There are more and more different types of bicycles and cyclists using the same bike path, making it increasingly crowded. To encourage even more people to take their bikes for longer distances and to ensure all cyclists can participate safely in traffic, cycling routes are being constructed.
Improved Bike Paths in 2024
In 2024, work has been done in many areas of the region to develop the cycling route network. Examples include:
• Bike paths along the Soomerwegh in Castricum
• Cycling route over the industrial area Beveland in Heerhugowaard
• Bike paths along the Provincial Road and Berkhouterweg in Hoorn
• The Zuiderzeeweg, a new connection from Edam-Volendam to the N247
• Renovation of the Oude Haagseweg in Amsterdam with a bus lane and cycling route
• Cycling route Kruisweg in Hoofddorp near the industrial area De Hoek
Pleasant and Safe Cycling Routes
Cycling routes are direct, comfortable, and safe cycling paths for distances of up to about 15 kilometers. Cycling routes connect villages and cities with each other and make destinations such as workplaces, shopping locations, schools, recreational areas, and public transport hubs more accessible for cyclists from within and outside the city. The future cycling network will consist of attractive and safe cycling routes where there is enough space for all types of cyclists, both slow and fast. They encounter as few obstacles as possible and often have priority over other traffic.
Progress of Construction
The Progress Report on Cycling Routes 2024 provides insight into the progress of building the cycling route network, as outlined in the Regional Future Vision for Cycling. The provinces of Flevoland and North Holland and the Amsterdam Transport Region aim to have the regional network of cycling routes completed by 2040.
