The covenant to prevent bird strikes around Schiphol has been renewed. The previous agreements expired at the end of 2024. The goal remains the same: to limit the number of collisions between birds - especially geese - and airplanes as much as possible.

Although flight safety is primarily the responsibility of the State and Schiphol, the provinces of North Holland, South Holland, and Utrecht contribute through wildlife management.

The approach has been adjusted: within 10 kilometers of Schiphol, management will be more intensive, as the risk of collisions is greatest there. Outside this zone, it will align with the provincial-wide wildlife management aimed at reducing the population of greylag geese in the coming years.

Spatial planning around Schiphol can influence flight safety, for example through the landscape that attracts geese. Because this affects many interests, flight safety will now also be considered in the spatial plans of the Novex region Schiphol.

The covenant aligns with the Wildlife Management Plan Geese 2025-2031 Opens an external link and thus forms a joint basis for limiting bird strikes.
