The Province of North Holland and the municipality of Haarlemmermeer have agreed that new developments in and around the Geniedijk East area will only proceed if they fit well with the protected status of the area.
Consideration is given to the quality of the environment and the interests of residents and visitors.
World Heritage
The Defence Line of Amsterdam is largely located within the Province of North Holland and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996. The Geniedijk East area also falls within the boundaries of this World Heritage site. Strict rules apply here: new developments must not affect the special values of the area. To clarify what is possible, the province and municipality have now established so-called development principles. These provide guidance for future projects.
Construction of Genie Park
It has also been agreed that the municipality and the province will work together to establish the Genie Park. The park fits the main characteristics of the World Heritage site: the dike and the open landscape. It also offers opportunities for more recreation and nature improvement.
