From Friday, January 16 to Friday, April 17, 2026, the exhibition Soul Glass will be on display at Pavilion Welgelegen in Haarlem.

The pavilion is open on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and admission is free.

An Ode to Glass

The exhibition is curated by Carina Riezebos, who has a passion for glass inspired by René Lalique, a French jeweler and glass artist born in 1860. His shapes, colors, and craftsmanship inspired her to pursue design. Ultimately, Riezebos became a glass artist herself.

The Soul Glass exhibition consists of installations, objects, and glass designs by artists Marc Barreda, Maroeska Metz, Barbara Nanning, and Carina Riezebos. Through the exhibition, they pay tribute to the versatility of glass as a material.

The Artists

Marc Barreda is an American visual artist and glassblower. By collaborating with artists and assisting in glass education in the United States and Europe, he developed his craftsmanship. In 2009, he moved to Amsterdam to pursue a masters degree at the Sandberg Institute. Barreda has a strong interest in the history of glassblowing. He has worked with the ancient murrine technique, which originated over 4,000 years ago in the Middle East. His objects are featured in international museum collections and now also at Pavilion Welgelegen.

Maroeska Metz is known for her recognizable Maroeska curl, an elegant shape featured in much of her work. After studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, Metz began as a sculptor and evolved into a designer of furniture, lamps, glassware, and objects. She learned craftsmanship and material knowledge by working with experienced glassblowers in Nový Bor, Czech Republic. There she made vases, glasses, and lamps. She is now mostly found in her studio in Wormerveer, where she works on handmade, unique pieces.

Barbara Nanning belongs to the generation of artists important for Dutch ceramics and glass art since the 1980s. In her work, she combines traditional craftsmanship with new materials and techniques. Her forms often arise during the making process, for example when throwing clay or blowing glass. In 2023, Nanning was named Artist of the Year, in the UNESCO Year of Glass. Her work is displayed in many museums worldwide, including the Louvre in Paris and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Carina Riezebos is an industrial designer working with glass and crystal. She studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven and continued her education at ArtEZ University of the Arts. In 1996, she started her own design studio. Since 2010, she has presented her work under the label CARINA. Her work was noticed by Royal Leerdam Crystal, where she became the first female chief designer. Connecting art and use is central to Riezebos. Her objects are not only beautiful but also functional and tell their own story.
