North of Medemblik, the Province of North Holland will start replacing 2 fixed bridges on the Medemblikkerweg (N240) this year.
In addition to these new bridges, the intersection will be redesigned, improving traffic safety.
The Medemblikkerweg (N240) runs directly north of Medemblik and crosses a small canal twice. There are 2 fixed car bridges that are narrow and due for renewal. Bicycle traffic uses the adjacent bridge. As the car bridges have reached the end of their lifespan, it is necessary to replace them. In the new situation, the car and bicycle bridges will be combined, creating more space for cyclists and car traffic. This will make the traffic situation clearer and safer.
Flexible and Demountable
The new bridges will be constructed in such a way that they can easily be reused in the future. They are an example of Industrial, flexible, and demountable construction (IFD). In Industrial, flexible, and demountable construction, standardized bridge parts are used. This allows for faster and more efficient construction. This means less disruption for the surrounding area and less strain on the earth, as the bridge parts (and thus raw materials) can be more easily reused in the future.
Accessibility
In the preparation, much attention is paid to accessibility during execution. Disruption is minimized by bundling the work. We also take seasonal agricultural activities into account as much as possible. In short, ensuring good traffic flow during the work is a priority.
Planning
On April 10, 2025, the province signed a contract for this project with contractor K. Dekker from Warmenhuizen. The contractor expects to start preparatory work in 2025. The new bridges are expected to be completed in 2026. The plan is for all work to be finished by the end of 2026.
