Deputy Esther Rommel officially opened the new Texel Hiking Network on Friday, October 31, accompanied musically by hiking ambassador and guitarist Tim Knol.

With the addition of 250 kilometers of hiking trails, the North Holland Hiking Network now spans the entire province.

Deputy for Tourism and Recreation Esther Rommel: “With the completion of the junction network on Texel, our wish for a fully connected provincial hiking network has been realized. This is great news for the more than 10 million Dutch people who enjoy walking. A short stroll nearby or a longer hike, it’s all possible in North Holland and from today also on the beautiful Wadden Island Texel. Thanks to this new part of the network, hikers can now discover the island even better: at their own pace and with an eye for nature.”

Island-wide hiking pleasure

The new Hiking Network on Texel forms a rich web of routes spread across the entire island. Residents, visitors, and tourists can explore and discover the island. Existing routes now connect better, giving hikers more opportunities to experience the diversity of Texel: from the dunes near the Lighthouse and De Cocksdorp, to the old cultural landscape of the Hoge Berg and the picturesque streets of Den Hoorn. The routes are now marked with the recognizable Hiking Network posts and signs.

Collaboration

The expansion of the Hiking Network was financially made possible by the Province of North Holland, the Municipality of Texel, the Stichting Toeristisch Investeringsfonds Texel (STIFT), and VVV Texel. The realization of the hiking trail was achieved through close cooperation between VVV Texel, Recreation North Holland, Municipality of Texel, Staatsbosbeheer, Natuurmonumenten, ANLV De Lieuw Texel, and the Rijksvastgoedbedrijf. Various Texel entrepreneurs, leaseholders, and farmers also support the network by welcoming hikers onto their land or in various hospitality venues.
