On Friday, September 12, Plofhuis 8 reopened after a lengthy renovation. The building has been refurbished and is now suitable for cultural activities. The Province of North Holland provided €100,000 in subsidies for the work.

Jelle Beemsterboer, Deputy for Cultural Heritage, and Alexander Scholtes, Alderman for Culture of the municipality of Amsterdam, opened the doors of Plofhuis 8 on Friday, after which attendees could view the interior of the building. With this opening act, Plofhuis 8 has officially been put back into use.

Cultural Offerings

The name plofhuis comes from the Cold War era when ammunition was stored there. In the event of an explosion, the roof had to blow off to prevent too much damage to the surrounding area. Several plofhouses are located on the grounds of Fort Uitermeer. These are rented out by the Stichting Uiteraard Uitermeer for cultural events and meetings. Plofhuis 8 has been equipped with new toilet units, a disabled toilet, and a dressing room for artists due to the renovation. This enables an increase in cultural offerings such as theater, music, and exhibitions on the fort grounds.

World Heritage

Fort Uitermeer is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Hollandse Waterlinies. The Province of North Holland, together with the provinces of Utrecht, Gelderland, and North Brabant, is responsible for the protection and promotion of the story of this unique defense heritage.
