At Bussum Zuid station, the first Buitenpoort in the Netherlands has been opened. A Buitenpoort is a train station located near a nature or recreation area.
Nature lovers can explore the area on foot or by bike as soon as they step off the train. Next to Bussum Zuid station, for example, you can find a beautiful heathland, forests, and heritage. In the coming years, more Buitenpoorten will be opened in Castricum and Heerhugowaard. Provincial Executive Jeroen Olthof of North Holland opened the Buitenpoort on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, in a festive manner together with the partners of the Buitenpoorten, including Alderman Mark Marshall and NS director Irma Winkenius.
Buitenpoorten
Provincial Executive Jeroen Olthof: “Not by car to nature, but by train! With the Buitenpoorten concept, we want to make it easier for nature outings using public transport together with our partners. Buitenpoorten offer a location outside the city where there is much to see and experience in nature. This ensures a better distribution of visitors and prevents overcrowding in certain places in the region. The Buitenpoorten will be further developed after opening into pleasant and sustainable meeting places where transport and nature go hand in hand.”

Travelers are welcomed on the platform by a life-size Buitenpoort logo. From the train, animal tracks on the ground lead them to the information pillar. This is a route map with sights of the nearby landscape.
After June 18, the Buitenpoort campaign Step into the outdoors, follow the track from the city to the landscape! will start. This will encourage nature lovers, hikers, and seekers of peace to travel by train to the Buitenpoorten.
