The Province of North Holland and the municipality of Schagen are exploring how Schagen East can be developed in the future. The municipality aims to build 1,100 homes on the site.
The municipality of Schagen has long desired to redesign the Schagen-East area. In their environmental vision Opens an external link the municipality indicates that it wants to build at least 1,100 houses. The municipality wants to respond to the high demand for affordable housing and housing with care. Additionally, there is a need for space for sports, recreation, greenery, and water.
The Province of North Holland is aware of the municipalitys desire but is also very cautious about allowing developments because the area has the status of Protected Landscape. Deputy Esther Rommel: “The municipality has now been able to demonstrate that the need for housing has increased and that the construction of homes in existing urban areas is insufficient in relation to the Housing Deal agreements. Therefore, we will explore whether the status of Protected Landscape (BL) can be adjusted to allow for construction. In these explorations, we will carefully consider the impact on the quality of the landscape. The aim is to preserve it as much as possible and, where possible, to strengthen it.”
The Provincial Executive will determine the outcomes of the exploration later this year, after which the results will be presented to the Provincial Council.
