The Province of North Holland will replace the Stolper bascule bridge on the N248 in the municipality of Schagen in the coming years.
The new bridge will be named Stolper Bridge. Preparatory work will start on March 9, 2026. Traffic around the Stolper bascule bridge can drive past the work site. However, road users should take into account entering and exiting work traffic and temporary speed restrictions.
Trees make way for new bridge
The new Stolper Bridge will be located about 20 meters north of the current Stolper bascule bridge. Several trees currently stand at that location. These trees will be removed in the week of March 9, 2026, to make way for the new bridge. The work takes place in the verge and along the North Holland Canal, minimizing traffic disruption as much as possible. After completion of the new bridge, the province will plant new trees as compensation.
Sand provides a solid foundation
Not only the bridge is being replaced. The roads leading to the bridge will also be adjusted. The ground under these new roads must first be solid. Therefore, starting mid-April, the province will place large sand heaps next to the ramp to the N9. This preloading will remain for about half a year, allowing the soil to settle and strengthen. These works also take place beside the road. Traffic should take into account entering and exiting work traffic and speed restrictions.
New Stolper Bridge replaces old Stolper bascule bridge
The current Stolper bascule bridge over the North Holland Canal is at the end of its lifespan. The province is replacing the bridge with a new drawbridge: the Stolper Bridge. The new bridge will be located directly north of the existing bridge. This allows traffic to continue using the existing bridge during most of the works. This keeps the area accessible and allows the contractor to work safely. It is expected that traffic can use the new Stolper Bridge in the fall of 2027, after which the contractor will remove the old Stolper bascule bridge.
