In January 2026, households purchased as many goods and services as in January 2025, reports CBS. In December, consumption grew by 0.8 per cent.

The consumption figures are volume figures. This means they are adjusted for price changes. In addition, adjustments have been made for changes in the composition of shopping days. The conditions for consumption were less unfavorable in February than in January.

As many goods and services

In January, consumers spent 0.4 per cent more on food and luxury goods, adjusted for price changes, than in January 2025. However, they purchased 1.4 pr cent fewer durable goods. They bought fewer cars, household items, and clothing. Furthermore, households consumed 2.1 pr cent more other goods (such as energy and personal care products) in January.

Consumers purchased as many services as in January 2025. They spent more on transport and communication, adjusted for price changes, but less on recreation and culture than in January 2025. Spending on services accounts for more than half of total domestic consumer spending by households.

Consumption conditions in February less unfavorable

CBS publishes monthly on several conditions for consumption in the visualization Consumption Conditions. Household consumption is related to consumer expectations, the labor market situation, and the development of their wealth. The indicators in the visualization correlate well with household consumption, but an improvement in conditions does not necessarily mean higher consumption growth.

In February, conditions for consumption were less unfavorable than in January. This is mainly because entrepreneurs in the industry were more positive about the future development of employment in their company and the year-on-year increase in stock prices was greater.
