The ferry ports of Den Helder and Texel need to be renewed. A new design is being developed for Den Helder. The province is collaborating with the municipality of Den Helder, the municipality of Texel, Rijkswaterstaat, ferry service TESO, and Defense.
Jeroen Olthof, Deputy for Mobility: “The ferry ports are the connection between the island of Texel and the rest of North Holland. The necessary renewal of the Den Helder ferry port offers opportunities for a different layout that improves accessibility and makes the environment more attractive. We want a ferry port that is ready for the future and aligns with the further development of the city and harbor.”
Recommendations for the design of Den Helder ferry port
Rijkswaterstaat has created a draft design in which the new landing facility will be located at the head of the parking lot, east of the current location. The new landing facility can be built while the current one remains fully operational.
The involved parties have agreed to further develop this draft design. The Maritime Cluster (municipality of Den Helder, province of North Holland, and Defense) has made recommendations to optimize the design. Recommendations include ensuring sufficient parking space, better bus connections, and safe routes for cyclists and pedestrians.
Next steps
The parties are finalizing the design. They are clarifying the costs and financial contributions of all involved parties. A construction schedule is also being developed to ensure the ferry service can continue operating and to minimize inconvenience. By summer 2026, there will be more clarity about the design of the renewal of the landing facilities and the spatial integration in Den Helder.
