This was decided in consultation with a delegation from the municipal council of Koggenland on April 16, 2025. The appointment is effective from April 18, 2025, until the mayoral vacancy is filled.

Van Maaren served as mayor of Zaltbommel from 2019 to 2024 and as mayor of Urk from 2012 to 2019. Additionally, Van Maaren has been an informateur/formateur for the Provincial Executive of Flevoland in 2023, faction leader and council member for the CDA in De Bilt, and a member of the labor affairs college of the Association of Dutch Municipalities.
