Commissioner of the King Hans Oosters has decided, after good consultation with the faction leaders, to appoint Agnes Jongerius as acting mayor of Oudewater as of November 3. She will hold the position until a new crown-appointed mayor for Oudewater is appointed.
In September, Mayor De Vries of Oudewater announced his departure. He will become director/editor-in-chief of the Overijssel regional broadcaster Oost. He will stop on November 1, 2025.
Agnes Jongerius was recently the acting mayor of the municipality of IJsselstein. From 2014 to 2024, she was a member of the European Parliament for the PvdA and since 2019 has been the leader of the PvdAs euro delegation. Between 2012 and 2014, she was an associated researcher at the knowledge center Institutions of the Open Society (IOS) of Utrecht University. Prior to that, she was, among other things, chair of the trade union FNV, a member of the Social Economic Council, and a board member of the Labor Foundation. Last year, she won the Bakhuis-Wolters Prize 2024. This prize is an award from the Provincial States of Utrecht and is for a person who is committed to society and particularly to womens emancipation.
The commissioner has consulted with the faction leaders of the municipal council following the appointment of Ms. Jongerius. The faction leaders and Ms. Jongerius look forward to a pleasant collaboration in and for Oudewater. Ms. Jongerius will remain until the appointment of a new permanent mayor. When the vacancy will be opened is not yet known.
