On Monday, June 30, the cycling route F28 between Amersfoort and Utrecht was officially opened. The province of Utrecht and all involved municipalities jointly gave the official start signal at the Werkwinkel in Den Dolder. Jan Hendrik Dronkers, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, was also present at this festive opening. The event attracted a wide audience of policymakers, project partners, and cyclists from the region.
Deputy André van Schie: “The cycling route F28 between Utrecht and Amersfoort offers commuters, students, and recreational cyclists a comfortable, safe, fast, and also very beautiful cycling route. The bicycle is thus an easy, healthy, and sustainable choice for the residents of De Bilt, Bilthoven, Zeist, Den Dolder, and Soest when they want to cycle to Amersfoort or Utrecht (or vice versa, of course).”
Smart, Fast, and Safe Cycling
The F28 is an important link in the regional network of cycling routes in the province of Utrecht. The route provides cyclists with a smooth and safe connection, with wide paths, red asphalt, good lighting, and as much priority as possible at intersections. We want everyone to be able to cycle easily and safely through the province of Utrecht. Therefore, we are building a strong regional cycling network. Cycling routes like the F28 are part of that.
Councilor Wouter Catsburg of the municipality of Zeist: ‘With the cycling route, Den Dolder gets a fast, green, and comfortable connection. This is good for work, school, and recreation. At the same time, we have made the village more future-proof with more greenery, less hard surfacing, and smart climate measures. I am convinced that this fantastic bike path will encourage residents to take the bike more often to reach their destination.’
About the Cycling Route F28
You can recognize the route by the green F-numbers on the signs. You cycle through nature and past artworks inspired by the art movement De Stijl.
This cycling route is not only convenient for commuting between the two major cities, but also if you want to cover a smaller part of the route. Often, it is even faster to take the bike than the car.
Mobility Councilor in the municipality of Amersfoort Tyas Bijlholt: “With this new, wide bike path, we are ready for the future. It is truly an improvement for the commuter on the way to work as well as for the recreational cyclist who wants to relax. You can cycle quickly and effortlessly between Amersfoort and Utrecht while enjoying the surroundings and nature. I really hope that more people will now take the bike to work.”
Although most of the F28 is now in use, work is still ongoing at some locations. For example, the Sperwerlaan in Bilthoven is getting a wider bike path, and in Utrecht, the Alexander Numankade and Jan van Galenstraat are being partially redesigned and provided with a new red asphalt layer. Behavior Campaign Encourages Use
The concept of ‘cycling routes’ is still quite new in the province of Utrecht. A survey in the summer of 2024 shows that 61 percent of residents are not familiar with it. Therefore, the province links the opening of the F28 to a campaign to make the route more visible and attractive. With signs, asphalt stickers, and fun actions along the route, cyclists are encouraged to choose the bike more often.
Bicycle App Makes Traveling More Fun
On June 5, the new national bicycle app ‘Da’s zo gefietst!’ was also launched. In the app, you can take on fun challenges, collect points, and redeem them for attractive prizes or donations to good causes. Moreover, you can participate in the F28 Area Challenge in the bicycle app starting September 2025. We challenge you to cycle more often over the F28 in September and October.
