To allow young people to experience the risks of cycling on an electric bike, municipalities, schools, and festivals in Utrecht can request a free e-bike simulator and course. The Province of Utrecht offers this to prevent accidents among young riders of electric bikes like fatbikes.
The number of young people suffering serious injuries due to accidents with electric bikes has quadrupled nationwide in four years. For Deputy Van Schie, it is important to raise awareness due to the concerning accident statistics: “Especially because the number of young people suffering serious injuries due to accidents with a fatbike or fast electric bike has increased so dramatically, we find it important as the Province of Utrecht to focus more on raising awareness among young people about the risks of speed in traffic.”
‘E-bike simulator’ and ‘e-bike course’
The province offers two special programs from Responsible Young Drivers, where young people actively engage: the e-bike simulator and the e-bike course. Students from Cals College in IJsselstein enthusiastically participated in the activities. “In both activities, young people experience the risks of cycling on an e-bike, such as underestimating speed and having less control in a busy environment. The young people learn to recognize dangerous situations and how to deal with them,” said Van Schie.
The e-bike simulator and the e-bike course can be requested free of charge by Utrecht municipalities, educational institutions (from group 8 to university), out-of-school locations, festivals, and events. The Province of Utrecht covers the costs and organization. Requests can be easily made by sending an email to: regina@ryd.nl.
