The Province of Utrecht will invest in a better and safer M.A. Reinaldaweg (N210) in Lopik-Oost. On July 9, the Provincial States approved an investment of over 23 million euros for the construction of a new intersection Graaf. On July 7, the daily board of the province also approved the proposals of the second measure package for the N210 in Lopik-Oost.
The N210 in Lopik-Oost has been a bottleneck for traffic and safety for years. Especially the intersection with the Lopikerweg Oost, better known as intersection Graaf, regularly causes traffic jams during peak hours and needs to be improved in terms of traffic safety.
Together with the municipality of Lopik and a sounding board group, the province has examined various solutions. Based on this, a design has been created that takes into account the environment, traffic safety, livability, traffic flow, landscape integration, and costs.
First measures: new intersection Graaf
For the measures that the Provincial States approved on July 9, funding is now available. This will be addressed:
- The current intersection Graaf will disappear and be moved about 150 meters to the north.
- Traffic to and from the Lopikerweg Oost will have a separate route to the new intersection, separated from the through traffic.
- At the new intersection, a secure crossing with traffic lights for cyclists and pedestrians will be installed.
- The bike path between the old and new intersection will be separated from the road and parallel road to limit crossings.
- The parallel road will largely become a bike path, only destination agricultural traffic will be allowed here. Other agricultural traffic will travel via the main road.
- The current crossing at intersection Graaf will be closed off with a noise-reducing guardrail.
- The bus stops Graaf and De Copen will be combined at the new intersection, with good transfer options and new bike parking. A new bus stop will also be created at the intersection with the Copenweg.
Second package of measures: more traffic flow
On July 7, the daily board of the province approved these additional measures for improvements to the N210 in Lopik-Oost:
- The roundabout N210/N204 will be replaced by a traffic light-controlled T-junction with two lanes towards Lopik and IJsselstein.
- Between this junction and the Copenweg, an extra lane will be added in both directions.
- The roundabout N210/Copenweg will also be replaced by a T-junction with traffic lights and extra lanes. A bus stop with bike parking will also be created here. The defense area (Mobilization complex) will have a new entrance on the south side at the Copenweg.
- Agricultural traffic will now be allowed on the main road between the S.L. van Alterenlaan and the N204. The road will be adjusted accordingly. The maximum speed on this section remains 80 km/h.
- The parallel road between the new intersection Graaf and the N204 will become a 3.60 meter wide bike path.
- The parallel road between the current intersection Graaf and the S.L. van Alterenlaan will also become a bike path. Cars will no longer be allowed here; a sluice will prevent shortcut traffic.
- The intersection N210/S.L. van Alterenlaan will be improved with extra waiting space and a safer crossing for cyclists and pedestrians, including a median strip.
Follow-up
On November 12, the Provincial States will decide whether budget will also be made available for this second package of measures. Although decisions are made in phases, it is one cohesive road project.
In the follow-up phase of this project, aspects such as landscape integration and green facilities will be further developed. Formal steps will also be taken to implement the measures. This includes the purchase of land and going through spatial procedures. Furthermore, traffic decisions must be made and permits must be applied for.
The expectation is that this project will be carried out between 2028 and 2029.
