In the province of Utrecht, we want there to be enough areas for recreation and that outdoor spaces are attractive for movement. How we want to achieve this in the coming four years is described in the new Draft Policy Program Recreation, Tourism, Sports, and Movement 2026-2029. This will be available for inspection starting September 1.
Deputy Rob van Muilekom: “We would like to be a province that stimulates and invites its residents to relax and move outside. Together with our partners, we ensure that there are attractive opportunities for everyone that encourage them to go out actively. And once you are outside; enjoy all the beauty that our province has to offer, such as our beautiful cities and villages, attractive nature, and wonderful heritage.”
Challenges
The expectation is that in the coming years, the number of residents and visitors to our province will increase. This means that the facilities in the areas of recreation, tourism, sports, and movement must also grow. We want to ensure the distribution of visitors so that the pressure on well-known recreational facilities does not increase further. We do this by bringing attention to places that are less crowded or known. Furthermore, we are dealing with higher costs due to, for example, overdue maintenance. Municipalities and provinces have less to spend, so we will have to work together with our partners to see how we can manage this.
Available for inspection and submitting opinions
The Draft Policy Program Recreation, Tourism, Sports, and Movement 2026 - 2029 has been set up according to the approach under the Environmental Vision. This means that for this policy program, discussions have taken place with as many stakeholders as possible from the field about their wishes and ideas. This input has been incorporated into the policy program. Starting September 1, the Draft Policy Program will be available for inspection for six weeks, and every resident of the province can submit an opinion. The deadline is October 13.
