Mayor Iris Meerts of the municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede will not return. She has informed Commissioner of the King Hans Oosters. In July, she stepped down due to the death of her stepson. Her absence will continue until the end of her term in December.

During the summer recess, Mayor Naafs of Utrechtse Heuvelrug temporarily took over her duties. This gave Mayor Meerts the space and time to process this great loss and think about the future. Her recovery has progressed, but is not yet sufficient for her to resume her duties as mayor.

Later this year, Mayor Meerts hopes to have the opportunity to say goodbye to Wijk bij Duurstede in person. The Commissioner of the King will soon discuss with the party leaders from the municipal council about the appointment of an acting mayor for a long-term period.
