Energy, circularity, and biodiversity were the main themes at the table during the climate lunch in Paushuize. Ten Utrecht climate mayors spoke with Deputy Has Bakker about how we can take faster steps together towards the 2030 climate goals.

The lunch marked the start of Climate Week. The figures from the Climate and Energy Outlook (KEV) show that the Netherlands, including Utrecht, is not yet on track to meet the 2030 climate goals. Utrecht is doing a lot, but extra effort is needed to reduce emissions faster. The Climate Mayors brought good examples to accelerate the transition.

What the Climate Mayors Shared

The climate mayors shared what they see and do in their municipalities. They emphasized that sustainable living must become easier and more attractive. They also called attention to a fair distribution of costs and benefits, for example with solar panels. Additionally, they highlighted the importance of more nature in neighborhoods, nature education for youth, and strengthening biodiversity. Awareness and behavioral change play a major role according to them.

New Ways of Thinking and Doing

There was a clear call to think and act differently. For example, about value. Climate Mayor Kirsty Mulder said: “We must value experiences more than possessions. Only then do sustainable choices become natural.” Ernst van Zuijlen emphasized the importance of cooperation: “As climate mayor, I want to ensure that residents and governments truly work together.”

And Lisanne Boersma reminded everyone of the urgency: “Every tenth degree of warming we prevent is worth it. That is what I am committed to: a safe, clean, and future-proof province.”

Call from Deputy Has Bakker

Deputy Has Bakker made a clear call: “As Climate Mayors, you are close to the action. Therefore, share local initiatives with us in the coming year that offer hopeful perspectives for action. We can strengthen them through our communication channels. Together, we show that change is not only necessary but already well underway in our province.”
