From January 1, a new provider of electric shared bikes will be available in the Utrecht region. The project is a joint initiative of the Province of Utrecht and the municipalities of Utrecht, Bunnik, De Bilt, Nieuwegein, Stichtse Vecht, Vijfheerenlanden, Woerden, and Zeist. The goal is not only to encourage bicycle use but also to offer a valuable addition to public transport.

Although shared bikes are already available, the offer will become more attractive to travelers through the following improvements:

  • There is a regional approach so that shared bikes can also be used across municipal boundaries;
  • Fixed and more attractive rates are applied;
  • There is guaranteed availability of shared bikes at public transport hubs and business parks;
  • A provider with good quality bikes and a large range will be available, facilitating longer rides.

Last summer, the selection took place and Lime B.V. was chosen as the winner to offer the electric shared bikes. Lime is already active in Rotterdam and many other cities in Europe and beyond. Lime was positively evaluated on the operational plan (GPS accuracy when ending a ride combined with quick complaint handling) and the large range of the e-bikes. Furthermore, Lime applies discounts for specific target groups, such as U-pass holders, at business parks and in neighborhoods with a high percentage of social housing, in addition to the established ride prices (e.g., 3 euros for 20 minutes).

In January 2026, Lime will start and the current provider Dott’s permit will expire. The project has a duration of three years with an option for two one-year extensions. The province will map the social contribution and user experiences together with all partners in the coming years.
