in Nature

On January 23, 2026, the Nature and Environmental Federation Utrecht (NMU) and Landscape Heritage Utrecht (LEU), with support from the Province of Utrecht, will distribute over 18,000 free trees to landowners – from farmers and private individuals to volunteer groups. Together, we strengthen the characteristic Utrecht landscape.

The trees are offered in convenient packages that allow you to create small landscape elements yourself – from hedges to alder rows and from wood rows to coppice woods. Applications are open until January 4, 2026.

Lively Landscape

Small landscape elements together form the lively Utrecht landscape. They once served as parcel boundaries, water barriers, or sources of wood, but even now they play an important role: they determine the atmosphere and recognizability of the region. And they are indispensable for nature. Coppice woods, wood banks, and hedges connect areas and expand the habitat of countless plants and animals. Think of songbirds that hide there, or butterflies and dragonflies that benefit from the shelter. Yet in the past century, about sixty percent of these elements have disappeared.

“With these tree packages, we give everyone the chance to take action and directly contribute to the characteristic Utrecht landscape,” says NMU project leader Isabel Kruisheer. “A row of young trees planted today is the landscape of tomorrow.”

Every Utrecht Region in Its Element

The Province of Utrecht has different landscapes, each with its own green features. In the Gelderse Vallei, you see the classic wood rows that block wind and provide wood. In the peat meadow area, there are coppice woods, once intended for tool handles and firewood. And in the Kromme Rijn area, clipped and sheared hedges still form natural boundaries. For the distribution campaign, five different tree packages have been compiled, tailored to soil type and landscape. This way, you can choose exactly what suits your land and environment.

About Plan Boom Utrecht

The distribution campaign is organized by Plan Boom Utrecht, a collaboration of the Nature and Environmental Federation Utrecht (NMU), Landscape Heritage Utrecht (LEU), and Stukje Natuur, and is financially supported by the Province of Utrecht. Trees are invaluable: they purify air, provide living space for animals, and help keep the climate balanced. In three years, Plan Boom Utrecht distributes 130,000 trees and thus makes an important contribution to the provincial ambition to realize 1,500 hectares of new forest by 2040.
